Collaborator role
This project is part of the ongoing biodiversity conservation efforts that have been underway for 15 years by the protected area manager, the Malagasy NGO SAGE (Environmental Management Support Service), supported by the National Botanical Conservatory of Brest as a technical partner. The long-term goal is to preserve 11 endemic tree species that are on the verge of extinction. The conservation of these species will be ensured by strengthening existing populations through the creation and development of specific tools.
SAGE collaborates with the University of Antsiranana to advance research on the conservation of these endangered species. This collaboration allows for the sharing of knowledge in botany, ecology, data collection methods, agricultural practices and technical conservation. These exchanges aim to enhance the skills of local stakeholders in biodiversity preservation. As part of this partnership, SAGE will establish several facilities, including two nurseries, a seed storage space, an arboretum, and mixed patrols to monitor the area. Additionally, various academic works related to this project have been fully funded by SAGE, including students’ thesis projects, demonstrating the NGO’s commitment to research and education.
This successful collaboration continues, with the goal of exploring new conservation approaches, which is the subject of this current research.
