Mathematics give a basis to most sciences, yet for a non-expert its role is hard to see - it is not rare that a new mathematical understanding or application is attributed as an advance in computer technology.

This presentation gives an overview of what Mathematics consist in, goals, ideas and uses. Four very different examples will illustrate how they, perhaps surprisingly, turn out to be closely connected with mathematics.
