Since the 20th century, the rapid technological progression of our civilization has largely been fueled by innovations in materials chemistry, introducing materials with enhanced performance. Among them, advanced ceramics stand out owing to their unique physical and chemical properties in comparison to conventional materials. Their behavior is directly influenced by their chemical composition and the arrangement of their atoms within extremely small structural units blocks known as unit cells, which contain only a few atoms.
Advanced ceramics are essential in a variety of technologies that impact our daily lives, spanning telecommunications, energy management, lighting, and heterogeneous catalysis, among others. This presentation aims to provide insights into the crystal structure features of key advanced ceramics, focusing on their roles for solid-state ion conductors and in solid-state lighting materials. Additionally, it will introduce the crystallization from glasses technique as an innovative fabrication method.
