structural tricks to accelerate formation kinetics of metal ion - macrocyclic ligand complexes

Modern diagnostic and therapeutic tools in medicine often rely on specific metal based agents (e.g. complexes) for generating image or enhancing its contrast, treatment of various diseases, etc. For a number of reasons (e.g. toxicity, targeting purposes etc.) the metal ions used in vivo must be packed (chelated) by using either open-chain or macrocyclic organic compounds, often called ligands. The talk intends to compare these ligands based on the physico-chemical properties of their complexes formed with lanthanide(III) ions. Our results show that the integration of macrocyclic and acyclic „units” within one molecule, one can combine the advantageous properties of both ligand types.
