Hidden Tours: an immersive experience that brings to life medieval Tours and the history of women artisans
LE STUDIUM is proud to present an application resulting from the research work of Dr Margriet Hoogvliet, a past Le Studium / Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow under the Smart Loire Valley Programme between June 2019 and June 2020 at CESR in Tours. Hidden Tours is the product of a collaboration between Dr Margriet Hoogvliet from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, researchers from the Centre d'Études Supérieures de la Renaissance (CESR) in Tours, and HistoryCity, a mobile media history project led by the University of Exeter (UK).
This innovative and free application brings Tours back to the Middle Ages by recreating the historical figure of Jehane Bernarde, a shoemaker and stocking-maker, during the year 1500. Using a geolocated old map of Tours, users of the app move around and stop at eight sites, listening to Jehane telling stories about her life and times. The tour takes place as the city prepares for the royal entry of Louis XII and Anne of Brittany. Jehane is on her way to make a delivery of silk stockings to the Comte de Dunois - but she is also on the hunt for a new book for her beloved books collection, a French Passion of Christ.
